Astrid Lindgren's text is a paraphrase of Karl-Erik Forsslund's 1900 poem, once popular in Sweden, which has been widely published in collections and anthologies, as well as as a picture book with illustrations by Harald Wiberg. A German publisher commissioned Lindgren to produce a shorter, prose version of the poem, which it published with Wiberg's illustrations in 1965. Lindgren's text was not published in Sweden until half a century later, with illustrations by Eva Eriksson.
